Rugs
Rugs are greatly intertwined with the history of mankind. The most ancient rugs were manufactured in the fifth century В.С. Archaeologists found them in Altai region, and now they are kept in the Hermitage. These rugs are likely to be weaved in Assyria. This fact indicates that rugs weaving was widespread even at those ancient times.
At first, rugs were intended for one family. If a rug was getting frayed enough, it was thrown out, and a new one was weaved instead. Sheep wool was the basic material to weave rugs from. Those rugs were notable for being quite small; besides, they had relatively low thickness – 10-40 knots per square inch.
Since the beginning 19th century, so called commercial period has begun. It was caused by the development of machinery. These rugs were intended for sale solely. In the 19th century, Persian economy was supported only by export of rugs.
Nowadays, rugs are manufactured all over the world. In the Asian region China, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, India are the biggest suppliers.
